Shine On (feat. Zito Mowa)
A 1 track electronic single (6m 41s) — released May 13th 2022 on Wah Wah 45s
Wah Wah 45s are proud to present a unique collaboration between the U.K. 's very own Afrobeat Ambassador, Dele Sosimi, and a producer who's been at the forefront of the South London electronic music scene for a decade now, Medlar.
The pair first joined forces seven years ago, when Medlar was asked by Dele's label to remix the title track from his last album,You No Fit Touch Am. The result was possibly one of the most popular and cherished remixes to appear on the imprint. The producer's respect for the history of Afrobeat shined through in the mix of course, but it was his ability to finely balance that with his house music instincts whilst adding an infectious groove and classic 80s analogue synths that really stood out.
The track was an instant classic, and it soon became clear that the Afrobeat Ambassador and Peckham producer needed to make some music together. Having never actually met during the remix process, the dating began, and luckily the two were clearly a perfect match.
Two years on from their first recorded output, theFull Moon EP- a record that received radio support fromGilles Petersonon BBC 6Music, as well as tastemakers and DJs across the globe, and was even featured on the latest edition ofGrand Theft Auto-the duo returned with the simultaneously poignant and bass worryingLord Have Mercy, which received support fromTom Ravenscroft,Huey Morgan,Deb GrantandRob Da Bank, among many others. This is now followed up withShine On, the second track to be taken from the forthcomingState Of PlayEP. Perfectly cued for the ever optimistically anticipated British summer, the track also a call for positivity in turbulent times.
"The title speaks for itself and so does the repetitive line 'shine on keep shining on...shine on like the sunshine'. It was hard to mentaly and psychologically cope with being locked down, not earning, losing friends, not being in control of day to day routine existence and the many other challenges we faced, but music again comes to the rescue with the power to make us shine on like the sun shines at sunrise. No matter what, nothing should be allowed to diminish one's sparkle. And addingFemi Eliason bass was the magic needed." Dele Sosimi
The track also featuresZito Mowa, part of a new wave of South African producers creating quite a buzz right now, and someone that had been on the duo's radar for some time.
"I'd been meaning to collaborate with Zito for a few years and had regularly played his tracks in my DJ sets. It seemed the perfect project to join forces on, so he sent over some melodic loops and some of his signature hiphop-esque house beats, which we vibed over in the studio and inspired Dele to come up with the vocal hook." Medlar
This ray of early summer sunshine is one of four forward thinking pieces of music from the pair, dropping this summer on 12" vinyl astheState Of Play EP. Watch out!
